Weird Religious News – Batman is an Atheist

weird religious newsIt’s fiction of course, but this week DC comics confirmed that Batman is not religious. You can find it here – (Batman #53). In one sense it says a lot about the general cultural shift away from religion. The rise of the nones is quite real, and so that is now also being reflected by cultural icons.

You can read more about it here. It is part of the complexity and development of the character to make it more compelling.

So what other religious news items popped up during the past week?

The Big News of the Week

It is of course the rather obvious, the issuance of the report that identifies over 300 Catholic priests who abused over 1,000 children.

I also posted some direct extracts for the report here a few days ago. I did not think it was possible because we hear about priests abusing so often, but it is harrowing stuff that will shock you.

Inevitably some are claiming that others are to blame. Here is a highly educated Catholic claiming that these abuse priests are simply atheists and satanists who joined Catholicism and that they only pretended to believe …

A more rational response is to perhaps be like Batman and simply walk away from this toxic mess.
