Top 5 worst verses in the Qur’an

quran-imageHere is a list of the top 5 worst verses in the Qur’an. Be aware, some of them are quite repulsive and truly frightening …

This is what Allah says… ‘Now go and strike the Infidel and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.” Surah 27:63

Happy is he who repays the infidel for what they have done to us – he who seizes their infants and dashes them against the rocks.” – Surah 34:12

So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, ‘Get up; let’s go.’ But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.” – Surah 135:27

A Wife, must submit to her husband as to Allah.” – Surah 5:22

When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.” – Surah 21: 7-8

That is clearly truly vile stuff and rather obvious proof that all Muslims are wicked evil people … right?

Ask yourself this. Knowing that you now know that the above verses are in the Qur’an, how do you now feel about the book?

Perhaps you have actually read the Qur’an and are already familiar with those verses.

OK, I have a confession to make, I cheated. None of these verses actually exist in the Qur’an at all. Instead I took a few bible verses and simply injected the word “Allah” instead of the word “God” and injected the word “infidel” in to make it sound Islamic. Here are those original bible verses …

“This is what the Lord Almighty says… ‘Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 1 Samuel 15:3

“Happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us – he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.” – Psalm 137:9

“So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.” Judges 19:25-28

“Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.” – Ephesians 5:22

“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again.” – Exodus 21: 7-8

So my point is this. You can take almost any religious text and quote-mine it for whatever agenda you might have. For example you can pick out all the nice stuff, discard the rather obviously not-so-nice bits, and claim it is like no other book and is uniquely divine. Alternatively, you can pluck out the not-so-nice stuff and hold it up as “evidence” that all those that revere the text are obnoxious evil bastards.

The truth is that we live in a world where humans are generally born into a culture that has a specific religious tradition. Associated with it will be a religious text that generally nobody tends to actually read or be familiar with. If some do become aware of some of the dubious bits, then they will rationalise it. Perhaps they will tell themselves that it was the word that was needed at that time but does not apply now, or perhaps they might conclude that they simply don’t understand it correctly, or that it has not been translated correctly?

Why don’t we see it for what it actually is saying?

Basically because we have invested a lot of time and emotion in the culturally inherited belief. To preserve that belief and not upset others around us by displaying doubt, we rationalise away such thoughts.

The books themselves reflect their actual origins and so they will contain not only nice noble stuff, but will also articulate some truly obnoxious stuff. The core problem is the idea that they are the ultimate and literal source of truth and guidance because they were divinely inspired in some manner. Once you accept that idea then you are in a position where, when faced with a choice between tradition or basic human decency, tradition will dominate for emotional reasons.

Humans resists such literalism and do often reject the divine literal truth hypothesis by simply reading the obnoxious bits as metaphors, and not directives to be followed to the letter. This has generally been the road followed to tame the fundamentalist modality that once dominated Christianity and is also the same road that many strands of Islamic thinking are walking to achieve the same ends.

Much of our history has been a struggle between such literalist traditions and cultural insights into a better way. For example, take the concept of slavery. It was once culturally acceptable and part of the normal fabric of society, hence such religious texts reflect that and are generally pro-slavery. Read either the Qur’an or the Bible cover to cover and you will discover that there is not a single word that suggests that slavery is not moral. Now that is interesting, because today slavery is almost universally regarded as morally wrong. It still exists, but is not considered decent or right.

The bondage the bible talks about is now viewed as a form a spiritual slavery and not a literal slavery, and so our far better morality can and does prevail.

Slavery

I’m really not kidding about those texts being pro-slavery.

In the Bible we find explicit instructions on whom you may enslave, and also explicit instructions on how to correctly beat your slave (Apparently it is OK as long as your slave is still alive a few days after the beating). If the bible is your book, then your immediate thought will be, “Ah but that is the Old Testament, we now have the New Testament”. But let’s not forget that the New Testament is also pro-slavery. Paul specifically directed Christian slaves to obey their masters, and did not even once drop a hint that the concert of slavery was wrong.

In the Qur’an we also find explicit instructions on whom you may enslave. If you are familiar with it then you will know that traditional Islamic law covers the topic at great length. If the Qur’an is your book, then the immediate thought will be that Islam greatly improved things for slaves and made it all a lot better. But you need to consider that the Qur’an is still supposedly the final ultimate word on the topic and yet endorses the concept and does not identify it as morally wrong as we do today.

Questions

  • If indeed these religious texts are the ultimate source of morality, are truly divine, and yet are also completely silent on the topic of slavery being morally wrong, then how exactly did we as a species come to the conclusion that slavery is wrong?
  • If indeed slavery is morally wrong (Hint: yes it is, and I truly and very earnestly hope that you did not need that hint), then you need to be aware that you are already rejecting the moral stance taken by all these religious texts on that topic. It is not just you, almost everybody alive today does. So how did that happen, how is it possible for us to have embraced a moral conclusion that is far superior to all these religious texts?
  • How is it possible for your religious text to be the ultimate unquestioned source of moral guidance, yet you personally hold a superior morality?

  1. Very well written. The logic all leads to your final statements and question. I think there is room for these texts to have divinely inspired parts just as many poems, music, and art does, but the cognitive dissonance it takes for people in these traditions to say every single word is inspired by God/Allah and is truth is arrogant, desperate, or ignorant. There is so much beauty that faith traditions can bring but the danger lies when we accept all that is written to be the Divine truths above even our own obvious understandings of morality.

Stop trying to defend the horrors found in BOTH of these ancient texts with your woke, revisionist nonsense. Its fucking cringe.

  6. DENIAL IS NOT A RIVER IN EGYPT!
Muslims & Parrots can repeat phrases, BUT they cannot think!
HER NAME WAS AISHA AND SHE WAS A VICTIM OF THIGHING = MUFA’KHATHAT
Literally translated, it means “placing between the thighs”

    IMAGINE!
Imagine a 50 year old Arab stripping a 6 year old child naked and putting his “willie” between her thighs and wanking himself off; squirting his cum all over the child’s naked body!

    IMAGINE!
Imagine this now 53 year old Arab having full, penetrative sexual intercourse with the 9 year old child and shooting his “load” of cum into her small vagina, shouting, “Allah Akbar”!

Even in the context of seventh century Arabia, however, Muhammad had to resort to divine revelations as a means of suppressing the prevalent moral code of his own milieu. Indulging with considerable abandon one’s sensual passions was so fundamentally at odds with the moral standards of his own Arab contemporaries that only the ultimate authority could, and did, sanction it.

    • That’s correct. The idea behind the article is to start with some verses from the bible, claim they are from the Qur’an, get the reader on board with the thought that these verses advocate bad stuff … then reveal later in the posting that they are actually bible verses … and so confront the reader with their own bias and perhaps to then inspire the reader to rethink their prejudice.

  8. Except you’re changing language in your comments. Infidel and Amalek do mot mean the same thing. Amalek is a specific term about a specific people in a specific situation. Infidel simply means someone who does not believe. So you’ve changed a quote from something that talks about a war against a specific people in a specific situation, to something that says that anyone who does not believe the same as you must be killed.. Completely misleading. How about you post some comments from the Quran BTW? Do it with full context if you want, it won’t make it better.

  9. Hello, I am going to try to explain the true context of those Bible passages:
For the first two verses there was time of war. And war against people who even killed their own children burning them with fire and dedicated those children to idols, false gods, demons. Of course those same people first did masacre the Israelites and did not help them when they were escaping from of course terrible slavery in Egypt at that time. Also those same pagan people are the ones that raped, killed the concubine woman in the third verse (not the believers in our true good God) the Bible narrates what happened to the woman, it is Not that it recommends those actions! So, again, the first two verses were as a way of eradicating those terrible practices so they wouldn’t spread like a virus from those nations at that time as when you have to defend people from people who ALWAYS do real EVIL deeds; please bear in mind that it was WAR time in those days. And thanks to the promise of God of His Holy Spirit, (prophecied in the book of the prophet Ezekiel in the Bible’s old testament) the Holy Spirit of Jesus that can indwell in us as prophesied by John the Baptist in the Gospel of John- one of Jesus ‘ diciples, it is that now we have like it was stated as a question a “superior morality” nowadays. Thanks and please you can find this by reading the first chapter of the Gospel of John. Also it is chapter 36 verse 26 in the book of the prophet Ezekiel, thanks, bye, have a good day

Humankind are no different to animals in this sense. The difference btw atheists and religious is that atheists accept that there are ambiguities and grey areas and nuances. And that beliefs evolve liks we have. Religious see things s black and white.forever stuck in the old ages.

  21. So what many people fail to realize about the Bible is that it is in two parts. Some say Old and New Testaments. The more accurate description would be Hebrew and Greek Scriptures.

The Hebrew Scriptures describe what happened to the Hebrews who were God’s people at the time.

When you read the 10 commandments which are part of the Mosaic Law you are reading a law specifically for the Hebrew nation at the time.

Now, as you read it particularly chapter 21 of Exodus you come across the word slavery but as you read it you find that this is not the slavery that we read in history books or that takes place illegally today in some countries. No God regulated it as it advanced his purpose.

No one was to be a slave for life unless he wanted thatNo one was to be kidnapped and held as a slave against his willFemale slaves had to be treated with care and compassion like a wife and the owner was responsible for taking care of her “needs.” There are other things as well but you can see here that clearly a slave still kept his or her dignity. In fact in most cases a person sold themselves or a family member into slavery to pay a debt

You care not about moral obligation yet trying to talk out lout about moral issues

There will be a time the essence of your behavior will appear to you and subject to your own reality that you think is “right”

    • The essence of your position is that the Quran is not a pro-slavery text. If I have not correctly stated your position, then please do correct me.

You can easily validate your position. Simply quote a reference from the Quran that clearly and unambiguously condemns the concept of owning people as property.

Let me also add one further clarification. I do not believe that you personally embrace the concept, nor generally do the vast majority of Muslims today. This is simply a discussion regarding the text itself.

Side Note: You appear to be concerned that comments don’t instantly appear. This is totally automated. For performance reasons the pages you see come via the cache. It takes a bit of time, not too long, for for cache to pickup any comments. Comments are not censored, unless of course they are off topic (links to a site selling shoes or similar for example). That spam filter is fully automated.

Side Note 2: You appear to be upset with me. That’s fine and understandable. We all build up an identify. Part of that involves the acceptance of specific ideas. If those ideas are criticised, then we feel personally attacked. It is the way we humans are.

You even created non existant Quranic verses. you accused Quran advocated slavery, when you cannot find a verse prescribing it, in fact the Quran prescribed liberation of slave…far earlier than USA history. And then you argue here you are trying to be moral. What ill value and misguided person you are

    Reply
    • I explicitly tell you in the posting that the “quran verses” were fake. It illustrates a bias that can come into play and the assumptions that can be made for specific quotes.

As for the quran, the text itself is pro-slavery and does not condemn the concept of owning people as property, and for completeness, neither does the bible. Slaves are mentioned in at least twenty-nine verses of the Quran – shall I quote them all for you? It even explicitly permits slave owners to take slaves as concubines.

It is to be expected because it reflects the culture of that time.

While the vast majority of contemporary Muslims agree that there is no place for slavery in the modern world, there has not been a strong internally developed critique of past or present slaveholding practices. In fact, modern Muslims have generally devoted little attention to thinking about or discussing the religious, ethical, and legal issues associated with slavery, perhaps because it is difficult to acknowledge and confront the scriptural and traditional permission for it.

      Reply
  24. Your analysis is only a conjecture of what Quran advocated. You are making up false accusation based on your ignorant view

17v106 And (it is) a Qur’an that We have divided, that thou mayst recite it unto mankind at intervals, and We have revealed it by (successive) revelation.
6v67 For every announcement there is a term, and ye will come to know.

Muslims are actually encouraged to free slaves, so much so that a grave sin of murder is to be penalised by freeing a slave AND paying compensation to the family

4v92 It belongs not to a believer to slay a believer, except it be by error. If any slays a believer by error, then let him set free a believing slave, and bloodwit is to be paid to his family unless they forgo it

You will not find an explicit verse prescribing slavery in the Quran; Quran in fact advocated the “freeing of slave”. Slavery was a culture among the Arabs (including etc various previous people) so advocating the freeing of slaves is to inculcate the awareness of the right moral concept among mankind.

Humans are not the first and the last, or the alpha or the omega; their discovery of “moral compass” takes time and God allowed certain things to unfold in the history of mankind, so that humans would eventually discover the true spirit of humanity given to them.

5v89 God will not take you to task for a slip in your oaths; but He will take you to task for such bonds as you have made by oaths, whereof the expiation is to feed ten poor persons with the average of the food you serve to your families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave; …

58v3 Those of you who divorce your wives by equating them with your mothers, then wish to go back on what you said, must set free a slave before they touch one another. This is what you are instructed to do, and God is well aware of what you do

    Reply
    • It is a long complex subject and there is no one universal stance, but instead there exists a huge diversity of thinking on the topic. The Wikipedia page on the topic of the Islamic View of slavery covers a great deal of detail – here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_views_on_slavery

The reality is this. Humans who embrace a specific religious or non-religious identity will be motivated to cherry pick the good bits and brush over the not so good bits. Stepping back and seeing what those outside can see is often very very challenging. That remains true for us all, including me.

Nothing can scientifically prove how we got here and quite frankly the better you follow the basic morales (which wouldn’t be in most societies if it wasn’t for Jesus or his likely Hebrew name Yeshua) the better person you are considered or the better remembered you are. The way the Abraham religions are the most popular and how almost everyone on this planet knows about Yeshua tells me that there is truth in this.

Side note if you only had the Quran you still would have heard of Yeshua or Jesus, whereas if you only had the Bible you wouldn’t hear about Muhammad and Allah.

For those that are not religious, it explains how things are the way they are. For those that are religious it explains how god did it.

  28. 1 Corinthians 11
3 But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man who prayeth or prophesieth, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.

5 But every woman who prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoreth her head, for that is one and the same as if she were shaven.

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, inasmuch as he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man.

9 Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man.

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head, because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, nor the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God.

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it comely that a woman should pray unto God uncovered?

15 BUT IF A WOMAN HAVE LONG HAIR, IT IS A GLORY TO HER, FOR HER HAIR IS GIVEN HER FOR A COVERING.

16 BUT IF ANY MAN SEEM TO BE CONTENTIOUS, WE HAVE NO SUCH CUSTOM, NEITHER THE CHURCHES OF GOD.

  31. Absolutely, you can choose to read some verses and ignore others to prove your agenda and that indeed is wrong. May I say thats exactly what you have done?

I demonstrate that my interpretation of the bible is correct by reading all of it and basing everything I read on the two greatest commands “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
Matthew 22:37-39. We all think differently but we can atleast agree on the second command, because thats how we were designed to be: righteous. Because thats who The Allmighty is,complete righteousness. Allow yourself to understand that nothing physical is infinite meaning that because we are here there is something else. “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Luke 11:10

    • In context … considering the entire text … your first quote demands that you love the entity that supposedly happily endorses ethnic cleansing and slavery as just fine. That’s really not love, it’s more akin to an abusive relationship.

Side note, no we were not “designed” there is no credible evidence that supports that claim. We have been naturally selected to be like this because doing so gives us a distinct survival advantage.

The extreme difficultly you really do face is that there is stuff in the text that is neither ethical nor moral. Picking out the nice stuff does not alter that reality.

  32. Okay thank you,

    Exodus 21:16
“Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death, whether the victim has been sold or is still in the kidnapper’s possession.

    Deuteronomy 24:7
If someone is caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite and treating or selling them as a slave, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from among you.

As we can see through The Allmighties words through the prophet Moses, Kidnapping (which is what traditional slavery is based upon) is not supported, this then excludes the purchase from slave masters and kidnappers in general. Therefore the only choices would be from a parent, someone who works for 7 years to pay off a contract or someone who willingly gives themselves up. I know it’s a hard concept to grasp because we only have one preconcieved idea of slavery but try to realise that if you’ve ever signed a contract you have also become a slave on your own account, very much like the army.

    • The full text, in context, wholly and completely endorses owning people as property and permits you to beat them as long as they do not die within a few days after the beating. There are exceptions, the text does not permit you to do this to people in your own tribe … unless you successfully trick them into being slaves for life (the beginning of Chap 21 explains how to do that. Such exceptions really do not make this OK.

The difficultly you face is that you believe this archaic text to be divine and true and that leads you into attempting to justify things that simply can’t be justified. You really should hit pause and give some serious thought to the stance that you are taking here.

  33. Muslims are brainwashed fanatics who are taught the teachings/instructions from Allah in the Qur’an from a very early age.

The instructions in the Qur’an are not open for debate on what their meaning might be. Everything written in the Qur’an is the literal word of Allah, period and no discussion.

You then have hundreds of millions of what I’d describe as primitive people, better suited up the 7th century that the 21st century space-age, who fall down on their knees and pray to this book 5 TIMES A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR, when you do something to this extreme, you are nothing more than a robot, unable to think and reason for yourself and at the mercy of the Imams who’s every word must be obeyed and unquestioned.

No wonder certain Imams can easily persued the truly gullible to go blow themselves up and take as many if the dirty non-believing kafirs n infidels with them as possible as Allah will be mighty pleased and they’ll get their 72 virgins and other goodies in the afterlife.

Take a long hard look at the continued slaughters and mayhem going on around the world at the moment and with those doing it shouting the words Allahu Akbar as they do so. There is absolutely no Christian comparison going on or any other religion so to compare what’s written in the old or new testaments against the Qur’an is absolutely meaningless.

Islam is a relentless conquering cult/ideology and a whole political system, not some peace-loving holy book, with multi-millions of truly fanatical; radical followers as well as multi-millions of others who are peace-loving types. The peace-loving types are irrelevant as it’s the minority radicals who push the agenda. This was the same in Hitler’s 1930s Germany, where the majority peaceful types didn’t matter as it was the minority Nazis who drove the agenda.

Allah instructs his followers in the Qur’an, in black and white and for all to read, that any of them who settle in other countries must take over that country, by any means necessary; including deception, and install Islam under the Sharia. They are instructed to do this until Islam dominates the earth. Muslims are also instructed never to make friends with the non-believers (that’s us in case you’d forgotten) and they are also instructed to use deception and to kid on infidels are their friends.

I STRONGLY believe that Islam is by far THE biggest danger we have faced since the rise of the Nazis in the 1930s. It is a conquering cult/ideology and absolutely must be viewed and dealt with as such or we are in big, BIG trouble, longterm.

  34. Slaves from the surrounding nations that are property for life and that the verse of beating your slave pertains to them, correct me if I’m wrong but there are no such verses that support this theory. Infact the bible mentions that Moses is speaking to the Israelites and there is no where in the bible does it state whether slaves can be taken from other nations nor does it allude to it.

Yes you can trick a slave if you are deceitful but we know that the bible does not condone lies or deceit. Leviticus 19:11″‘Do not steal. “‘Do not lie. “‘Do not deceive one another.

The third and fourth flavour you brushed over would be rights and kindess, Imagine being homeless and someone lets you live with them, gives you a job and food ( possibly even gives you a wife). After all of this you love your master so much you declare it and become his servant forever. Nothing like a slave were used to is it? Nope rather more of an adoption like extended childhood in a sense. So as an adopted child becomes property that are loved and provided for so is a servant who becomes a masters property thus like an adopted child if a parent is harsh you can leave the home in a few years or you can choose to live with them forever.

    • Yes Immanuel, you are wrong. I will simply quote the verses for you.

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life – Leviticus 25:44-46

20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. – Exodus 21:20-21

My mind is truly blown that you are striving to justify slavery (owning people as property) as a solution to being homeless or as a form of adoption.

How exactly do you demonstrate that your fringe interpretation is correct, and the millions of others are wrong … apart from a bit of wishful thinking?

We don’t know the size of the city nor its culture and therefore we can not judge the whole bible off of information we don’t have, however we can judge the bible off of the other core values which we do have and are stated in Leviticus and Matthew.

it is better as an example read the verse 18 of sura 27 and find out the rights of Islam . ( this verse has a very incredible scientific fact)

  39. Where’s the Context?

Yes as you have showed us anyone can take anything out of context and give it another identity (as you have done at the start using the Quran) and they can also give it another meaning without the sufficient text that portrays the context badly (as you have done after the Quran part)

So let me give the text that shows the context of the bible verses

1 samuel 15: Revenge on the Amelekites

2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: `I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt

3’Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy everything that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle
    and sheep, camels and donkeys.'”

4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim–two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men from Judah.

5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine.

6 Then he said to the Kenites, “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
From the verse you gave it sounds like the Israelites are harsh unmerciful people.

In verse 2 it shows the battle only happened because they were attacked previously when they were defenceless, in verse 6 you are able to see the compassion the Israelites show to those who are merciful.

8 Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us.

9 Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

“Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction” Daughter of Babylon are the Jews breaking the covenant who are being punished by the Allmighty through the hands of the Edomites, who are taking this as a happy victory.

”happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us.” Happy ones are the Edomites fulfilling the task the Allmighty gave them of punishing the Jews who have been sinful: the Daughter of Babylon.

“Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.” Happy one referring to Edomites who are dashing the infants of the Jews (the Daughter of Babylon) because of their sin against the Allmighties covenant.

  41. Judges 19:20-30 & 20:1-11 Wicked men and their city destroyed for rape

Wicked men demand a traveler to come out so they can rape him, the traveler puts out his concubine, she is raped to death. The traveler carries her back and reports what has happened. The whole of Israel comes against the city where this took place, destroy it and everyone in it.

19:20 “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.”

21 So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

22 While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

23 The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this outrageous thing.

24 Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But as for this man, don’t do such an outrageous thing.”

25 But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go.

26 At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight.

27 When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold.

28 He said to her, “Get up; let’s go.” But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home.

29 When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

30 Everyone who saw it was saying to one another, “Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Just imagine! We must do something! So speak up!”

20:1 Then all Israel from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came together as one and assembled before the LORD in Mizpah.

2 The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God’s people, four hundred thousand men armed with swords.

3 (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, “Tell us how this awful thing happened.”

4 So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, “I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night.

5 During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died.

6 I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel’s inheritance, because they committed this lewd and outrageous act in Israel.

7 Now, all you Israelites, speak up and tell me what you have decided to do.”

8 All the men rose up together as one, saying, “None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house.

9 But now this is what we’ll do to Gibeah: We’ll
go up against it in the order decided by casting lots.

10 We’ll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah[a] in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for this outrageous act done in Israel.”

11 So all the Israelites got together and united as one against the city.

He then cuts her body up into parts and distributes it … and you have no problem with this?

Meanwhile this is used to justify obliterating the entire city as if every single citizen in that city had participated … and you are OK with this?

    ἀνδράσιν (andrasin)
    Noun – Dative Masculine Plural
Strong’s Greek 435: A male human being; a man, husband. A primary word; a man.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her

26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,

27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

29 After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church—

30 for we are members of his body.

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

32 This is a profound mystery–but I am talking about Christ and the church.

33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

    slave woman
    παιδίσκης (paidiskēs)
    Noun – Genitive Feminine Singular
Strong’s Greek 3814: A female slave, maidservant, maid, young girl. Feminine diminutive of pais; a girl, i.e., a female slave or servant.

Slaves had rights and no one had to be a slave, a slave was someone who chose it out of love for their master.

    Exodus 21

2 “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.

3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him.

4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.

5 “But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,’

6 then his master must take him before the judges.[a] He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant
    for life.

7 “If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do.

8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself, he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her.

9 If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter.

10 If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights.

11 If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.

26 “An owner who hits a male or female slave in the eye and destroys it must let the slave go free to compensate for the eye.

27 And an owner who knocks out the tooth of a male or female slave must let the slave go free to compensate for the tooth.

32 If the bull gores a male or female slave, the owner must pay thirty shekels of silver to the master of the slave, and the bull is to be stoned to death.

    • Slavery had two flavours …
      – from the surrounding nations … slaves were property for life. It was fine to beat your slave as long as they survived that.
      – jewish slaves were only slaves for a specific period of time, but could be tricked into being slaves for life. The text you quote tells people how to do this. You offer to let them go, but only them, and not their wife or children, hence you trick them into staying for life so that they stay with their wife and children.

You are highlighting the second and brushing over the first.

Are you really OK with all of this and fine with the concept of people being property?

  44. Are you kidding me Yes God is Love but are you very Naive to think that God has not punished man I can give you several off the top of my head without thinking. What happened with sodem and Gomorrah do you know the story of Sodom Gomorrah in what it means God-sent down an angel there to see how the people would react to a poor stranger One in only 1 person took him in .offered him food and clothing. and and what did the rest of the village Want to do to this man to committ Homosexual acts on the man. The man Who took in the stranger said that it was wrong and against God’s Law. he had 6 daughters and told the men in the village they can have any of his 6 daughters you choose but leave the man alone . The villagers chose to break through and preformed serial acts on the manor should i say again Homosexeul acts. God was so angered with that what did he do? He destroyed the 2 cities and there was never to be homosexuality again. It is in the Bible. And to this day , the Roman Catholic church will not allow Homosexuality or people who act that way to enter the church and if you did not know, sodomy which is the term issued by the law in an assault is directly from Sodom. And again incase people did not see or understand, the 2 cities and all the wicked people were destroyed except for the one man and his daughters.
Or how about when God said that people were evil they did not follow God’s laws so he asked Noah to build the ark to take 2 of every animal and everyone who belied in him and what he was going to do was welcome on the ark. Nobody went or believed but his family and God Flooded the earth and destroyed all the evil on it.
In the book of revelations, he said the world is still evil and will do it again. He promised it would not be by water but fire. If you need more or don’t believe you can very easily read the Bible and revalations. I can give you more if i need too. God is a God of love but if you directly against him with no consequences you are very mistaken. Also the very simple fact if you believe in God you must believe in the devil. Heaven and Hell is everyone in Heaven no. If you want to Live a very sinful life And deny Jesus God will deny you entrance into heaven

Okay, now think rationally. What would you have done if your mother/wife/sister/daughter was raped infront of your eyes and other male members were killed brutally, will you still forgive them or will you want justice? If God forgave the worst persons in the world, will the victims be satisfied? If God will forgive everyone, then everyone will do as they please. Will there be any law and order then? Thus the God has to punish the wrong-doers.I don’t know about other religions,so I am referencing to only my religion, and I am a Muslim.Allah has said that the wrong-doers will be sent to hell, that’s correct. But what if somebody did wrong half of his life then devoted the rest for good and helping others? Then the God will surely forgive him.But will the victims be satisfied?Nope. Thus Allah will try to compensate. He will give the victim a better place than what he deserved. And the worng-doer will be punished(Temporarily). Then after enough punishment, he will be sent to heaven. But then again, who did a very little good, but more wrong-doing anyone can imagine,he will surely be sent to hell. This will be applicable for both muslims and (also) non-muslims.Last but not least,God is the judge to decide what he will do.

  60. I’m certainly not condoning the verses above, or the bible. I’ve had a problem with christianity long before I studied Islam. I do think there is a difference, if you compare the words of jesus christ to the words (and actions) of mohammed.

I also think it’s silly that if a person criticizes christianity no one beats an eye, but criticize islam and everyone goes crazy, says you’re a racist, islamophobe, etc. Double standard.

In reality many who come out about not believing are often reviled and rejected by their family … in the US. Not always the case, but true for some.

// criticize islam and everyone goes crazy, says you’re a racist, islamophobe //
Some who deploy such criticism are actually being racist or xenophobic and some are offering up frank thoughtful criticism. You can usually work it out by determining which is which by observing if people are criticising an idea, or if they are condemning people for simply having a specific cultural inheritance by accident of birth.

  61. I quite agree with Dave. A greater reading of religious texts and a deeper understanding will clearly show that all these religious stuff such as scriptures are man made and not God written. God as we understand is pure love and the God cannot never think of punishing the so called wrong doers. If a religious book says the wrong doer will be punished in hell or women should subject to men etc., it cannot be God word.

Religions came in to existence to bring orderliness in our lives and society. It is to discipline the society and make the people lead a spiritual life, which means loving everyone including those opposed to us, being honest, being compassionate etc.

We have become so conditioned with our religious beliefs that the spiritual contest is lost.

Man made religion and man made scriptures can never be perfect and to blindly follow an imperfect scripture is to destroy the very purpose for which religions were orignally intended

Let us what is good in each religion and leave what is hurting the humanity and nature

  65. Luke 45-47 is a parable, and should be taken into context. It’s only to illustrate the rapture, returning of Jesus. We all are the slaves, and he is the homeowner in this parable. He is away right now, and If we don’t believe he is coming back, we will live for ourselves, however we want. If we live not believing in Jesus and that he will return. When he does return for his children, references the slave (unbeliever) being beaten and punishment, as Hell.
Kind of like how a child, teenager is told he shouldn’t throw a house party while his parents are on vacation, but does it anyway BELIEVING there to be no repercussions, and when his parents come back to find out he did, there is punishment. Slavery was a common thing back then, so Jesus spoke this parable to them that they may understand of his returning. Jesus wants Hell, pain, beating, punishment, or slavery on no one. In fact he took all that so you wouldn’t have to, but hell it is a real place, and the path that leads to destruction is wide and broad, so it must be said.
it may have taken a little while, but after Jesus, look slavery is a very minimal thing. Think about the biblical principles used by Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
About that part in Judges, one thing I’ve learned from this chapter is, if you have a Road trip to take, or journey and it is night, and you are tired. Get some good rest and travel early in the morning, instead of rushing it that night. You left a lot out of this story. A man went back to get his women servant from her fathers house, that she went back to her fathers because she got mad and was rebellious. He came to the house with kind things to say. After he was there his women servant agreed to go back with him. After staying there a couple days he was ready to go back and her father urged them to stay, rest well, and leave in the morning. He refused and left that night with his women servant, he needed another place to stay along the way, found an older man and he invited them to his house, where he says he has plenty to meet more then needs.
After there, men from the same town came and surrounded the house, in my imagination like a swat team surrounds a structure there planning on invading. Threaten harm to them if they did not give him the MAN who was traveling to have sex with him. The home owner came out to reason with them and even offered his own virgin daughter, and the woman servant that they would not do these evil things to that man. They took the women servant and raped her. Those were evil dudes who did those things. And another thing this chapter mentions is there was no king in Israel at this time so it was more like an anarchy at this time. People of Israel said nothing like that happened in Israel since they were rescued as slaves in Egypt.
The leaders of all the people and tribes of Israel came together there to discuss what to do about it, about like we would do in a community. They gathered foot Soldiers to raid the town to find the men who had did this thing, the town wouldn’t give the men up, and eventually went to War over it. The Bible mentions good and bad in it, but there is no where in judges saying, or hinting toward, “rape women like these men did.” The Bible did say these men’s actions are EVIL. Good will and always will prevail. I’ve spent about an hour on this so hope this helps show that I love you guys and I want the Truth of the good news to be shared. It’s so that it may benefit you.

    • The bible is rather explicit. Women should cover their heads, be silent, and submit. If you believe, then you will be familiar with the references. The word that best describes this politely is “medieval”.

The idea that humans are property is one that is generally recognised as a bad idea these days. The idea that belief should be deployed as a means to suppress any objections that a slave might have is part of that package of bad ideas.

Picking out the good bits and being inspired by them is just fine. Attempting to justify the very bad stuff instead of coming to terms with it is, is also best summed up with one word – “indoctrination”. I do of course understand. You have deeply invested emotionally (as I once did), hence it can become rather challenging to come to terms with it as it actually is.

I’d recommend hitting pause and being a tad more critical about some of the ideas you have embraced.

I’m an atheist myself, and I thought this was kind of amusing but like how Sam Harris wrote in The Moral Landscape, to paraphrase, some morals CAN be deemed more valuable than others based on well being and if those morals affect your well being positively. This means that some people’s beliefs, however unfortunate, are less intrinsically good for people’s well being. To compare the Bible and the Quran and say that they’re both equally as bad as each other is intellectually dishonest. And before anyone decides to label me as a bigot, I come from a Muslim household and my mother prays 5 times a day. Just because I have a different view that may interfere with yours, doesn’t make me hate your view, I’m just trying to be as objective as possible. Nonetheless, when I look up some fucked up shit from the BIBLE, is the first search result that comes up a prank? I guess I know where Google’s heads at.

  74. I’ve came here to address each and every point of this article, and why it’s obvious that the writer did little research. As for the first verse, in which Israel is commanded to strike down Amalek and leave it desolate. This is indeed God commanding judgment upon an entire city, many would call that violent. God also called judgment on Sodom and Gammorah, and the whole city was swallowed up-people don’t complain about that being violent despite it being the same concept of a righteous and sovereign God judging his own creation. Also, this desolation of the city didn’t come for no reason. Before God destroyed Sodom and Gammorah he swore that he would not destroy the city if even one person in it was of good nature, but there was not a single person. So from that we can conclude that no one in Amalek was a person of good moral character, but that still doesn’t make it ok to kill them, right? I mean you can’t just kill people Becuase they are bad people. And I concede that, but using the scriptures we know that God always gives time to repent before he brings forth judgement, take Nineveh for instance. He sent a prophet to warn them of thier wrong doing and give them time to correct themselves before he smote them. Surely it is ok for a Creator to erase His creation if it does not serve its purpose, and refuses to conform to its purpose after given the opportunity. The passage in Psalms is a prophesy, God is not condoning the killing of Babies but rather saying that is what is going to happen. The passage in Judges is simply a historical account, the Bible (and therefore God) is not condoning those actions, but rather factually stating that they did indeed happen. Wives submit to your husbands as to the Lord, is part of the bigger picture of a Christian marriage, which is to be an example of Christ and the church. Yes the wife may submit to the husband, but at the same time the husband must always serve the wife, and be willing to lay down his life for her. Which biologically fits into the way the two different genders were wired to function. As to the last verse, for a daughter to be sold into a slavery (not the form of slavery we are acquainted with) is not the worst thing for woman who where highly oppressed at the time, if you continue to read you’d see that this women who was sold would have the legal protection of a man granting them rights which they otherwise would not have, as well as giving them financial support. Not to mention this was part of the Governmental law of the the Mosiac covenant which is succeeded by the Davidic covenant, and then made irrelevant (The Hebrew Governmental and ceremonial law where taken out of use by Jesus, however the moral law still applies) by Jesus, thus making that point invalid. Conversely the koran mentions many many many calls to violence, that understood under the proper context are still just calls to violence. You state that we rationalize doubts as to not leave are religion, that however is false. We use text evidence and logic to debunk false narratives spread by anti relegious people. To your point on God condoning slavery, that is not correct. The Old Testament and the Mosiac Governemtal law set up standards for how to own slaves, which were much nicer than the usual slave owning protocol at the time. But that was simply Becuase the nation needed a governing law on a common issue at the time, God called for all slaves to be released in Jeremiah. The law for slaves was there to protect slaves from being mistreated, (in both the old in New Testament) but still true believers would find fualt and slavery and therefore not own any. Summarized like this

“Another crucial point is that the purpose of the Bible is to point the way to salvation, not to reform society. The Bible often approaches issues from the inside out. If a person experiences the love, mercy, and grace of God by receiving His salvation, God will reform his soul, changing the way he thinks and acts. A person who has experienced God’s gift of salvation and freedom from the slavery of sin, as God reforms his soul, will realize that enslaving another human being is wrong. He will see, with Paul, that a slave can be “a brother in the Lord” (Philemon 1:16). A person who has truly experienced God’s grace will in turn be gracious towards others. That would be the Bible’s prescription for ending slavery.”
    -Gotquestions.org

Therefore all 3 of your questions are irrelevant.

If you come to Scripture looking for something to criticize and isolate passages out of context, no doubt you will find something to be outraged about. If you actually look at the context of the entirety of Scripture and study it fairly, you will find it to be a remarkable book, even if you only look at it as a body of literature (of course, I believe it to be the divinely inspired Word of God, and treat it as such).
I hope I cleared some things up and taught you some things so you can realize your wrong, factually speaking you can’t deny that your whole article has been disproved. This is not a personal attack against you, as I love you as all Christians are called to love all people. However your article was wack dude.

      – Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing is just fine – Justification: you are assuming on the basis of no evidence at all that they are evil and deserved it.
      – Slavery is just fine – Justification: you assert that slavery in the Bible was not really all that bad, hence you are OK with owing people as property. I’d love to know how you rationalise the guidance that tells you that beating your slave is also fine as long as the slave is still alive after the beating.
      – Women must submit to men – … in a word no.

There are also today “Loving” Christians who would, if empowered to do so, happily kill, for example this preacher who is calling for gay people to be murdered, or this pastor who is calling for any women who has an abortion to be executed (and both of those examples are from the last week, I don’t need to look too hard to find such examples)

Most Christians who quite happily condemn both of the above and explain “That’s not my Christianity”, need to also listen to most Muslims who also happily condemn the Islamic atrocities and explain “That’s not my Islam”. If you opt to not believe them, then why should they believe you.

  83. Maya, it’s ironic that you insist that the Bible be read in context while simultaneously quoting the Quran out-of-context. The verses that you quoted from chapter 4 and 9 are in the context of self-defense:

“Why should you not fight in the cause of God when weak men, women, and children are imploring: ‘Our Lord, deliver us from this community whose people are oppressive. . . .'” [Quran 4:75]

“Would you not fight people who violated their treaties, tried to banish the messenger, and they are the ones who started the war in the first place. . .?” [Quran 9:13]

With little effort, the same type quote mining can be done with the New Testament:

“Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” [Matthew 10:34]

“Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” [Luke 12:51-53]

“But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them–bring them here and kill them in front of me.” [Luke 19:27]

“He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” [Luke 22:36]

  84. Dave, I’ll give you credit for at least trying to be fair-minded, but I don’t think you’ve made a persuasive case for abandoning scripture as a source of morality. You wrote, “Read either the Qur’an or the Bible cover to cover and you will discover that there is not a single word that suggests that slavery is not moral.” That’s not exactly true. The Bible was written by various authors over centuries so, not surprisingly, it sometimes contains contradictory views on the same subject. The Bible does contain a lot of pro-slavery stuff, but it also contains anti-slavery stuff, certainly more than a single word:

“The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were in Jerusalem to proclaim release to them. . . . And all the officials and all the people obeyed who had entered into the covenant that each man should set free his male servant and each man his female servant, so that no one should keep them any longer in bondage; they obeyed, and set them free. But afterward they turned around and took back the male servants and the female servants whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection for male servants and for female servants.” [Jeremiah 34:8-11]

The Quran was written by a single author over a period of about two decades so, not surprisingly, it’s more consistent:

“It is not for a human that God would give him the book, authority, and Prophethood, then he would say to the people: ‘Be servants to me rather than to God!’ . . . .” [Quran 3:79]

    “Righteousness is. . . . to free the slaves. . . .” [Quran 2:177]

“If one kills a believer by accident, he shall atone by freeing a believing slave. . . .” [Quran 4:92]

    “. . . .If you violate an oath, you shall atone by. . . . freeing a slave. . . .” [Quran 5:89]

    “Charities shall go to. . . . free the slaves. . . .” [Quran 9:60]

    “Those who estrange their wives. . . . shall atone by freeing a slave. . . .” [Quran 58:3]

“He should choose the difficult path. Which one is the difficult path? The freeing of slaves.” [Quran 90:11-13]

During Muhammad’s lifetime, there were still people who continued to own slaves, but they had to basically ignore the Quran’s clear and repeated condemnation of slavery. The Quran says:

“The Arabs are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy, and the most likely to ignore the laws that God has revealed to His messenger. . . .” [Quran 9:97]

As you mentioned, later “traditional Islamic law” covers the topic of slavery at great length, it even posthumously attributed the practice to Muhammad. But it covers slavery at great length precisely because the Quran doesn’t, except to repeatedly condemn it and urge emancipation. The first question you asked at the end of the article assumes that scripture is silent about the moral repugnance of slavery, but it isn’t. The question also assumes that we as a species came to the conclusion that slavery is wrong. Presumably, independent of, or even in spite of scripture. But I see no evidence that that’s true. People who reject scripture, like Thomas Jefferson or Richard Dawkins, sometime reject slavery in theory, but they seem to be cool with it in practice. Thomas Jefferson could write flowery words about freedom and independence while holding hundreds of humans in servitude. And Richard Dawkins can polemicize about the supposed justification of slavery in scripture, but he’s not going to give up the fortune he inherited from his slave owning ancestor, Henry Dawkins. As Dawkins’ atheist compatriot, Niall Ferguson said, “The moral simplification urge is an extraordinarily powerful one, especially in this country, where imperial guilt can lead to self-flagellation”. You see, slavery is no biggie, and there’s no need to flagellate yourself over it! It begs the question, if morality shouldn’t be based on scripture, then what should it be based on? “Science”? “Reason”? Isn’t that what Jefferson, Dawkins, and Ferguson claim to base their “morality” on?

  85. I can’t speak for Islam but I can surely speak for Christianity. The evidence that you use for pro-slavery in the Bible is very weak and what you see as mainstream garbage found on the internet. The verse you are referring to is Ephesians 6:5. Paul tells the Ephesians to obey your earthly master AS YOU WOULD CHRIST. He is taking this unfortunate situation that they are in and trying to make it about God. If you read the Bible a little more you would find that Paul does that a lot. Not to mention that the Ephesians lived in Ephesus, which was then overtaken by the Romans. When Paul wrote this latter, he was already held in captivity by the Romans. So it seems a little weird that a slave would be making pro-slavery claims. Now, your point that Paul doesn’t drop a hint that slavery is wrong, is a very shallow argument, because that doesn’t go to show that he doesn’t think that. In fact, I know he thinks slavery is wrong, because because he says it! In Timothy 1:10 he blatantly states that slave kidnapping and slave trading is unholy, irreligious and evil. How do slaves become slaves? Well, they’re kidnapped and forced into it, then traded.

  86. The New Testament Bible verse that you use is a very shallow and mainstream argument. The idea that Paul is hinting at is not to be pro-slavery but he is trying to get these enslaved people and trying to get them to make the situation about God. If you read the Bible a little more, you would realize Paul does that a lot. Now, the verse you are referring to is the verse written in the book of Ephesians. The Ephesians are a group of people who lived in Ephesus, which was then overtaken by Rome. When Paul wrote this book and that specific verse, he was actually enslaved in Rome at the time, so it doesn’t really make sense that a slave would be pro-slavery. You also said that he doesn’t drop a hint that slavery is wrong. In that specific verse he doesn’t, but in Timothy 1:10, also written by Paul, he blatantly stated that slave trading and slave kidnapping is unholy and evil, and how do slaves become slaves? They are kidnapped and then traded.

Quran (4:89) – “They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks.”

Quran (4:95) – “Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame, etc.), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home).Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward ”

Quran (9:3) And a declaration from Allah and His Messenger to mankind on the greatest day (the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah – the 12th month of Islamic calendar) that Allah is free from (all) obligations to the Mushrikun (see V.2:105) and so is His Messenger. So if you (Mushrikun) repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot escape (from the Punishment of) Allah. And give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful torment to those who disbelieve.

Before you advocate for a rose coloured version of Islam, make sure you are psychologically and militarily prepared for the future outcome. Please read and educate yourself from the little of vast verses that saturate the whole of the quran. Also please get the bible and read the verses in context that this writer has with dishonest mischief has left out. We do not say these things because we hate muslims, facts of history do not lie but people do to advance their course that would put many lives in jeopardy in the long run.

  89. This is so dumb. 1. We came here to see questionable quotes in the Quran. 2. All the Bible quotes were from Abrahamic teaching before the teachings of Jesus. 3. This is a strawman argument because proving there were some bad quotes in the Bible DOESNT dismiss the bad quotes in the Quran. 4. Over 90% of Christians & Jews dont follow the OT while majority of Muslims follow sharia law.

      I agree.

// 2. All the Bible quotes were from Abrahamic teaching before the teachings of Jesus//
      One is NT

// Over 90% of Christians & Jews dont follow the OT //
… or the NT either :-)

// Muslims follow sharia law. //
Most if asked would agree. What is fascinating is that if you dig a bit, you will find that there is no agreement on what sharia is. Like Christianity, there is a vast diversity of thinking and no agreement.

The posting is not designed to support any specific variation of belief, but to instead challenge a literalist interpretation that leads to intolerance and lack of compassion for others. This applies to all texts.

  92. I don’t think this makes the point you think it does. Putting aside the fact that it’s a huge problem that the Bible contains thse verses, it’s completely believable that they could have come from the Quran. Both texts are pretty barbaric. However, christians at least have the significantly less violent New Testament to padd the rough edges, not so much in the Quran. Soo, yeah, good job missing the big picture. And congrats for your incredible moral enlightenment of not hating Muslims.

    • // Both texts are pretty barbaric. //
Both texts contain things that are virtuous and noble, but also things that are abhorrent.

The argument that your preferred text is not as barbaric needs to also be considered in its historical context. It has delivered up a long history of intolerance, discrimination, crusades, and inquisitions. Not all that far back in history there were adherents who would happily disembowel and set fire to people like me, then quote the NT to justify that.

  93. I think it’s hilarious that you try and take excerpts from the bible out of the context of the whole story, like God condoned the behavior. SMH. People are dumb enough to believe it though.

    • Your position is very easily verified, all you need to do is to cite one verse in which the bible explicitly condemns the concept of slavery. The fact that you did not is because no such reference exists. You should seriously pause and think about that.

      Reply
  94. To say the concept of slavery is wrong is untrue; after all, prisoners in jails and prisons are slaves as well. And that type of slavery is permitted in the American constitution, Amendment 13,

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”

Note the “Except as a punishment for a crime” bit.

  95. Lemme answer those three questions:
    1. Slavery is NOT morally wrong. Slavery is alright, should it follow the Islamic Law that permits it. And Islamic slavery is very different from American slavery. In Islam, slaves are taken as prisoners of war, which is similar to the American prison system. In Islam, slaves are to be treated like family members. If you so much as hit a slave, you would have to set him free. Contrast that to American slavery, where slaves were whipped for hours. So it’s not slavery that’s wrong, but rather the horrible treatment of slaves which forced us(Americans) to end it.
    2. See above.
    3. We don’t hold a moral superiority.

This is not right. some random people will come across this and think it is true

In the article you wrote Surah 135:27, whereas there are only 114 surahs in the Quran

  100. My brother or whoever you are…..please read full verses before you draw conclusions. It’s even in your Quran that Jesus (isa) is word of God . He performed miracles. Healed people and he died an will come again. Surah 10:94 says if you are confused about your religion ask those of the holy bible. I pray God grants you the spirit of wisdom so that you will see the light .

  102. Huh, some interesting stuff you brought to the table, only I wouldn’t be inclined to believe that this is Christian because Christians don’t live in a vile society based off of treating women like garbage and slaughtering gays and non-believers. By faking texts from the bible, you have actually exposed your own flaws. The reasons why most people site texts from the quran is to draw examples from the quran to modern practices in Islamic countries following sharia law. I have never heard of any modern Christian spewing Episians 5 22, but I do know that approximately 1000 women die per year in Pakistan alone due to honor killings in a society based solely off of ideological beliefs in the quran’s many violent passages. Lately, I haven’t heard anything much about Christian sex trades, but something I do hear about all the time is PEDOPHILIA (@Muhamid with the 1st grader wife… Oh hold up, girls aren’t allowed to go to school under sharia law. 6 years old, sorry) and rape and sexual abuse running absolutely rapid in countries under sharia law, a following based entirely off of this book. Radical Christianity can’t push farther than the great depression, while radical Islam can’t seem to push farther than the dark ages.

    • My brother I think you’re an True Christain is I’m right then read Revelation 2:23 in which Jesus Christ ordered to kill the children’s of an adulter woman for spread sexual immorality

      Leviticus 20 3
A man cannot lie with another man if he do he shall put to death and his blood in his own hands

If you’re a true christain than kill every Gay and adult superstar but you don’t because you use the reference in your favour which is a sin according to Christ.

If you’re a Jewish then it became more easy read talmud Moed Kattan 17a: If a Jew is tempted to do evil he should go to a city where he is not known and do the evil there.

      Penalty for Disobeying Rabbis

Erubin 21b. Whosoever disobeys the rabbis deserves death and will be punished by being boiled in hot excrement in hell.

Sanhedrin 57a . A Jew need not pay a gentile (“Cuthean”) the wages owed him for work.

      Jews Have Superior Legal Status

Baba Kamma 37b. “If an ox of an Israelite gores an ox of a Canaanite there is no liability; but if an ox of a Canaanite gores an ox of an Israelite…the payment is to be in full.”

      Jews May Steal from Non-Jews

Baba Mezia 24a . If a Jew finds an object lost by a gentile (“heathen”) it does not have to be returned. (Affirmed also in Baba Kamma 113b). Sanhedrin 76a. God will not spare a Jew who “marries his daughter to an old man or takes a wife for his infant son or returns a lost article to a Cuthean…”

Jews May Rob and Kill Non-Jews

Sanhedrin 57a . When a Jew murders a gentile (“Cuthean”), there will be no death penalty. What a Jew steals from a gentile he may keep.

Baba Kamma 37b. The gentiles are outside the protection of the law and God has “exposed their money to Israel.”

      Jews May Lie to Non-Jews

Baba Kamma 113a. Jews may use lies (“subterfuges”) to circumvent a Gentile.

      Non-Jewish Children are Sub-Human

Abodah Zarah 36b. Gentile girls are in a state of niddah (filth) from birth.

Abodah Zarah 22a-22b . Gentiles prefer sex with cows.

      Insults Against Blessed Mary

Sanhedrin 106a . Says Jesus’ mother was a whore: “She who was the descendant of princes and governors played the harlot with carpenters.” Also in footnote #2 to Shabbath 104b of the Soncino edition, it is stated that in the “uncensored” text of the Talmud it is written that Jesus mother, “Miriam the hairdresser,” had sex with many men.

      Gloats over Christ Dying Young

A passage from Sanhedrin 106 gloats over the early age at which Jesus died: “Hast thou heard how old Balaam (Jesus) was?–He replied: It is not actually stated but since it is written, Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days it follows that he was thirty-three or thirty-four years old.”

So brother what are you talking about I respect Islam , Christainity and Juda because I belongs non of them in my words believe in Christ and follow his way of Love and compassion

      Christ said love your enemy

Christ said those you don’t love his brothers and sister is a sinister

The New Testament, what Christianity comes from, includes this thing called the “New Covenant” where God, through Jesus, basically says “I got it mostly wrong before, listen to my new stuff, and if you can pull it off, welcome to heaven.”

find a quote from the New Testament that compares to the qu’ran and you might have a leg to stand on.

    • Actually jesus Christ shows you what is necessary to fulfill the law in the new testament, he tells us that the only way to fulfill the law is to love each other, he also clarifies that the only one who can judge people is him, did we are all guilty of breaking the law.
      Mathew 22
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
