AMERSFOORT, THE NETHERLANDS, 08 JANUARY 2013 – Mars One, a not-for-profit organization which plans to establish a human settlement on Mars in 2023, today issued the base requirements for its pending Astronaut Selection Program. This establishes the first step toward the global selection process which will commence in the first half of 2013.
So who gets to go? Basically anybody on the planet who is breathing qualifies …
Mars One is opening the astronaut program to anyone on planet Earth that meets the base criteria. It is not necessary to have military training nor experience in flying aircraft nor even a science degree.
You do not even need to be educated, stupidity is not a barrier …
Mars One is not seeking specific skill sets such as medical doctors, pilots or geologists.
Are they serious? Well they claim that they are. However, before you rush out for a trip to MARS, there are a few things you should be aware of …
- You get to be on TV … yep they propose to fund all this via a global televised program which ultimately selects which set of four astronauts from those assembled will be the first to go to Mars … think Big Brother.
- It is a one-way ticket, they have no plans to bring anybody back .. ever … yes really.
Now, having said all that, there are a few things here that stand out as red flags …
- Big Brother co-founder, Paul Romer, is in the mix here
- They are using a TV show to fund it all
I am fairly confident that it is not real, I have visions of them picking four gullible folks and then sticking them in a simulator for a “voyage to mars” while we all get to watch … a sort of Trueman Show in which they think it is reality and we all know it is not, but I do also wonder if the twist here is that we don’t get told it has been faked and so we get to watch something we think is real.
Then again, perhaps these folks are crazy enough to actually try this, what do you think? Personally I’m convinced it is just the latest twist of reality TV.
