The nuttier right-wing religious fanatics within the MAGA cult are as always doing their thing, and so here are this week’s samples.
It’s getting sad that at this point in Trump’s presidency, MAGA cultists like Eric Metaxas are still bragging that “I don’t think there is anybody who loves this president more than I do”: “I believe God has appointed him for such a time as this.”
- Ah yes, the classic fallacy: Appeal to God, citing oneself. The epistemology here is doing backflips.
- However, I should add this – when it comes to being “Biblical”, then I guess Trump does tick a lot of boxes. Treating women as mere objects for men’s pleasure is very biblical. Oh, and blaming women for every terrible thing, that’s biblical too. Tribal conflict, hatred of other clans, genocide, that’s solidly “Biblical”. Trump can, and does also brag that he is quite familiar with many women, including underage ones, and has known them in the biblical sense of that word.

- You can play word games with belief like this all day. For example, Jesus explicitly directed his followers to never swear an oath (Matthew 5:34–37), and so we have literally millions of “Christians” often swearing an oath by placing their hand on the book that very explicitly tells them to not do that, and that doing so is evil. Would Shane conclude that they are not “True” Christians?
- In reality religion, be that Christian or Islam, or any other belief, does not actively prohibit a pledge of allegiance to any nation state. Millions of American Muslims are active, loyal citizens, including soldiers, judges, and elected officials.
- Will MAGA be demanding that they all wear yellow stars next week, because that’s what is literally going on here, that is the direction these lunatics are going.
