Pharmakeia in ancient Greek refers to sorcery, poisoning, or ritual magic, not medicine. Early Christian theologians did not oppose medicine and many actively practiced it. For example, Luke, the author of the Gospel of Luke and Acts, is traditionally identified as a physician.
