UK Prime Minister left 8-year old daughter behind after a pub visit

This is quite frankly hilarious, the news is out today that David Cameron went out to the pub with his wife and kids, then upon returning home realised he had accidentally left his 8-year-old daughter behind.

Do I condemn him for it, no not at all, when you dig into the details, you appreciate that it was a very simple mistake that anybody could have made …

The couple’s daughter Nancy wandered off to the toilets while they were arranging lifts and they only realised she was not with them when they got home.

The prime minister rushed back to the Plough Inn in Cadsden, Buckinghamshire, where he found his daughter with staff.

A Downing Street spokesman said: “The prime minister and Samantha were distraught when they realised Nancy wasn’t with them.

“Thankfully when they phoned the pub she was there safe and well.

A couple of interesting observations …

  • The British Prime Minister just pops out to the pub (like everybody else), with his wife and kids … I love the concept, and wonder if there is any other nation on the planet where the national leader  has a sufficient degree of freedom to just pop out to the pub.
  • Part of the problem here is that the poor bloke has to traipse around with several bodyguards, so he travelled in one car and his wife was in the other –  each assumed their 8-year-old was in the other car.

So why am I blogging about it? … well because its damn funny, but also because it reveals that the good and the great are no different from the rest of us, pub trips, forgetful moments etc… Conspiracy theorists often conjure up images of those in power residing in hollowed out volcanoes and stroking white cats, or perhaps others have visions of leaders as folks who are infallible so stories like this frighten them ….

“Pub staff found their daughter in the toilet and didn’t know what to do.

“It’s not like you can look up David Cameron in the phone book and then ring to say, ‘You’ve left your daughter behind’.

“It’s frightening the prime minister of Britain can forget something so important as his own daughter.”

Personally, I’m reassured that he is normal, but I’m sure some wags out there will now cite this as evidence that he does not care about the little people, or perhaps suggest that having Walter Mitty in charge means that we are donald ducked … and of course I’m waiting for the “UK Prime Minister makes another U-Turn” headline.

Oh and don’t expect to see a  ‘No Child Left Behind’ act in the UK any time soon.
