Bill Nye Says Nay To Anti-Evolution

The following article comes from The National Center for Science Education. In it Bill Nye, The Science Guy, has a few words to say about Creationism, here it is …

Prompted by Michael B. Berkman and Eric Plutzer’s recent column in Science deploring “a pervasive reluctance of teachers to forthrightly explain evolutionary biology,” Popular Mechanics asked Bill Nye for his reaction. “It’s horrible,” Nye replied.

He explained, “Science is the key to our future, and if you don’t believe in science, then you’re holding everybody back. And it’s fine if you as an adult want to run around pretending or claiming that you don’t believe in evolution, but if we educate a generation of people who don’t believe in science, that’s a recipe for disaster. … The main idea in all of biology is evolution. To not teach it to our young people is wrong.”

Nye was particularly concerned with the characterization of evolution as “just a theory,” arguing, “People make flu vaccinations that stop people from getting sick. Farmers raise crops with science; they hybridize them and make them better with every generation. That’s all evolution. Evolution is a theory, and it’s a theory that you can test. We’ve tested evolution in many ways. You can’t present good evidence that says evolution is not a fact. ”

A Supporter of NCSE, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” was the host of the popular science education television programs Bill Nye the Science Guy — which won eighteen Emmys — and The Eyes of Nye; he is currently the executive director of the Planetary Society, the world’s large space interest organization.

I also have a few words to say about creationism, unfortunately most of them consist of raw anglo-saxon phrases, so I’m unable to repeat them here.

What I will say is this, do not let the Creationist community deceive you, there is no science behind any of their claims, not one jot of credible evidence. They will claim that evolution is in doubt, and they will claim that real scientists support them, but this is simply a mixture of outright lies and fraud. As an example of just how credible their claims really are, here is a link to an earlier posting of mine where I go though a selection of creationist claims, pull back the curtains and illustrate that a complete con job is being pulled on you by taking quotes out of context.

If you examine the peer-reviewed scientific literature, they have published nothing at all, but don’t take my word for it, try this:

  • Go to PubMed here
  • Enter the word “evolution” and select search … you get drowned in hits. These are all peer-reviewed papers.
  • Now, try the same with “creationism” … you get 114 hits to articles that are critical of the concept or simply examine the existence of the silly belief

And that says it all, there is no science behind the claims, not one jot. If they say they have a claim, then, fine, let then first go do the science and provide solid evidence. They can’t because there is no evidence, and so they revert to lies and deceit.

When faced with creationist claims … be very very skeptical.

If you do truly believe in Creationism, then you have become the victim of fraud. You have been presented with evidence and facts that are simply not true, and so you have been robbed of something truly precious … your mind.

  1. Not until forty years after its discovery [Eoanthropus dawsoni] would scientist agree that piltdown man was a hoax, an elaborate ruse…Unaware of the trick being played on them, the scientists who announced and described Eoanthropus congratulated themselves on their foresight: Piltdown was precisely what they had perdicted they would find, a “blend of man and ape.” ( Ancestral Passions)
Evolution is a dogma NOT science. Evolution makes us believe bones survived millions of years in feet of dirt–and before that we just to believe it happened because the bones didn’t survive. Real Pragmatic.

    • John, the science is not with you on this.

Even prior to its exposure as a hoax, piltdown was deemed to be enigmatic aberration inconsistent with the path of hominid evolution as demonstrated by fossils found elsewhere. It did not support evolutionary theory.

As regards the claim that it is not science, the facts are …
      – Number of peer-reviewed papers published in credible peer-reviewed journals that support evolution = way too many to count
      – Number of peer-reviewed papers published in credible peer-reviewed journals that refute evolution = almost zero

      And one additional number …
      – The percentage of life-science scientists the accept evolution as a well-proven fact = 99.98%

Go do the science, get it written up, and then you have a case … until that happens, the only dogma here is the creationist dogma.
