Today’s daft claim: “Black Hole discovered in Quran” …. Nope.

download (19)A Muslim has posted the following claim that is currently doing the rounds at the moment … (I’ve had to truncate the text a bit, it is too long to post it all) …

THE SCIENTIFIC MIRACLES OF THE QURAN : BLACK HOLES

… the verse below may also be pointing to this scientific discovery about black holes:

When the stars are extinguished, (Qur’an, 77:8)

Moreover, stars of great mass also cause warps to be perceived in space. Black holes, however, do not just cause warps in space but also tear holes in it. That is why these collapsed stars are known as black holes. This fact may be referred to in the verse about stars, and this is another important item of information demonstrating that the Qur’an is the Word of Allah:

[I swear] by Heaven and the Tariq! And what will convey to you what the Tariq is? The Star Piercing [the darkness]! (Qur’an, 86:1-3)

Sigh! … what can one say. It is of course the usual stuff, pluck some vague poetical phrase out of context, massage the words a bit, then crowbar in a claim about it describing modern science.

Was this an original claim?

Nope, not at all, it came from elsewhere. The guy who posted the text simply cut and pasted (as usual) without any thought.

Did he truly think it would impress?

Perhaps, but things have changed, no longer can individuals be conned so easily. If, for example, I key in “Quran black hole debunk”, the first hit is this YouTube rebuttal … (it is part of a  collection that debunks many of these “Miracles in the Quran” claims) …

It took me 30 seconds (or less) to find this, and there are many other rebuttals out there, it is not alone.

What is clear is that the Internet is now very much becoming the marketplace for ideas and beliefs. Stuff that would have been previously unchallenged is now robustly debunked. All you need is just one or two clicks and you have the answer, so when challenged with stuff like this, go and search to see what the other side is saying and become familiar with the full conversation.

The Alpha Source

It is perhaps also worth pointing out that the vast majority of serious Islamic scholars simply do not go along with any of these “Modern Science in the Quran” claims, so you do have to wonder where it all comes from.

So where does the claim come from and who is it being propagated by?

Many of these claims originate from profiteers such as Harun Yahya (real name is Adnan Oktar) – also known as Adnan Hodja (Preacher Adnan) and, to his followers, Adnan Agabey (Big Brother Adnan). What is truly weird about his stuff is the cherry picking. We face claims that modern science is in the Quran, but at the same time we are advised that the parts of modern science that conflict with belief are rejected. For example, he gives evolution a big thumbs down. So who exactly is this guy?

  • Adnan Oktar is a very well-financed author and Islamic creationist based in Turkey.
  • He has a collection of over 60 websites that Muslims tend to cut and paste from quite a lot, along with a stream of YouTube clips containing wild claims that are presented in a sciency sounding manner, hence fool many. These clips are also often promoted as “evidence” for Islam.
  • His only formal educational training is as an interior decorator, and also in Islamic theology. What now motivates him is that he has discovered that the promotion of such claims to the Islamic community is very very profitable.
  • He is crazy – That is not an opinion, but rather a clinical fact. At one point he was arrested and charged with promoting a theocratic revolution for which he served 19 months. During this time he was first confined to a prison clinic, and then Bakirkoy Mental Hospital where he was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive personality disorder and schizophrenia.
  • He is listened to – He has successfully built a large publishing enterprise (the Science Research Foundation) and sells his daft rhetoric though Islamic book stores worldwide. He is considered to be one of the most widely distributed authors in the Muslim world, and has a television show that is viewed by many in the Arab world.

If all this stuff has indeed been robustly debunked, then why does it persist?

Mr Oktar will carry on because it is e$$entially a license to print money, and has made him very wealthy $elling the books and tapes to the guillable. As for the believers, the term that perhaps best describes it is “Confirmation Bias“, they have been successfully conned. In a world where previously cherished ideas are being challenged there is a rising tide of religious insecurity, hence the market for stuff like this that apparently confirms the original belief, and permits little things such as reality to be happily ignored. It is perhaps a worrying trend, and illustrates how some are retreating away from modern science back into religious dogma.

An interesting quote from Richard Dawkins on all this is found here …

After I give lectures, I am often approached by honest and sincere young Muslims who have been deluded into believing that important ideas of modern science were anticipated in the Koran or by Muslim ‘scholars’. I always ask them for examples, and the ones they produce are always pathetic testaments to the power of wishful thinking.

I hope Allah give u guidance and let u know the right as because u are searching about quran even more than I am doing.. even after being an Arabic grammar student..

  4. Quran is not a science book, Quran clearly says in many places it has signs for those who think, now to answer you question the verse Najam ( mean star ) and sakib ( something that makes a hole or perching) in sura najam it also explains the shape of the perching as a lot tree which is exactly the shape of blackhole, also the distortion of sight because of the gravitation pull of the blackhole, putting all these things together it is clearly talking about blackhole. Quran was revealed 1400 years ago, if it would have said blackholes clearly then the next 1350 years people would have been asking what blackhole is Quran talking about.

    • Hi Jeff,

You can play these games with any text at all. For example …

Scientific miracles mentioned in Moby dick that cannot be told by a human decades ago. Those scientific miracles are being confirmed today by the scientists.

Osteoporosis: “It was in Queen Anne’s time that the bone was in its glory” [..] (Chapter lxxv – THE RIGHT WHALE’S HEAD – CONTRASTED VIEW)

Evolution: “That all creatures of the land are of their kind in the sea”[…] (Chapter lviii – BRIT)

Red Nebula: “Stubb longed for vermillion star” […]

Big Bang: “and the ball, and the explosion; so the graceful repose of the line” [..] (Chapter lx – THE LINE)

      MATHEMATICAL MIRACLES IN MOBY DICK:

The word IRON appears 85 times. The word METAL appears 10 times.

      85+10=95

      Atomic Number of Iron = 26, Atomic Weight = 55, Total Isotopes = 14,

      55+26+14=95

      Word construct appears 1 time,
      Word Create appears 1 time,
      Word Water appears 5 times,
      Word Air Appears 2 times
      1+1+5+2=9

Hydrogen Atomic Nubmer = 1, Oxygen Atomic Nubmer = 8

      8+1=9.

Today, scientists tell us, both hydrogen and oxygen combines to gives us water. MIRACLE!

And many assasination were predicted in the holy Moby Dick: http://cs.anu.edu.au/~bdm/dilugim/moby.html

How could have Herman Melville (PBUH) known this scientific facts? Unbelievers will tell you that it’s all by chance – they’re too blind to see the miracles !!

We can all look up at the clouds and let the pattern seeking engine that sits between our ears and interpret random shapes to see things that are not actually there at all.

  6. Unfortunately, a lot of people (regardless of religion) find themselves following a false leader / scholar, getting dictated with false information and follow them blindly. Adnan Oktar is a very dangerous and a deluded man. A big conspiracy surrounding him. He is currently (and finally) behind bars and is likely to stay there for a very long time. Him and such people should not be considered serious or related in any way to Islam / The Qur’an.

  7. I’ve read in your previous comments that you say “The Qur’an says the sun sets in a muddy pool every night”? Can you tell me which verse this is from? If you’re referring to (18:86 ), this tells us the story of Dhul Qarnayn – whom it is not known wether a prophet or not but a very strong man. Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it [as if] setting in a spring of dark mud, and he found near it a people. Allah said, “O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness.” – This happened once, not everyday. From my understand, this verse refers to a black whole. Why? Because as we know it, the sun does not set but the Earth spinning around it. So what does ‘a star setting’ could mean? From my logic, it means it’s either loosing it’s light or being pulled into a ‘dark’ matter (“in a spring of dark mud”). Regardless, I don’t know what the fuss is about wether Black holes were mentioned in the Qur’an or not. The purpose of holy books is to shed light to us and teach us how to be a good person. Not the explain every single scientific truth.

    • I think our thinking is very much aligned and that we do actually agree here.

The point of the article is not to ridicule all Muslims. Instead it is to ridicule one rather silly claim.

A key point to embrace is that my posting points out that no serious scholar today makes such a claim. The source for the claim is actually a guy who is a rogue and a fraudster who simply wants to make money. Tragically such claims are for some popular because some grasp such claims and then promote them. By doing so they make themselves and their belief look utterly silly.

Regarding “sun setting in a muddy pool” and other similar bits … the point is this – There are some who argue for a very literal interpretation and that often leads to not only silly claims, but actual violence. This way of interpreting is something most credible Islamic scholars reject, and it is also something that the vast majority of those who hold some variation of Islamic belief would also reject.

  8. Quran doesn’t say we are made of potters clay, also it’s a fact that water is the molecule of life, scientists far better equipped than any of you have reverted to Islam after reading and understanding. are you more scientifically inclined than they? It doesn’t say the sun sets in a muddy lake or watever you said, many things are lost in translation and you should seek a real scholar and qualified translator for an answer on many of your questions. You cherry pick quotes that sound ludicrous in english, usually something comes before or after that’s gives it more sense or then there is the fact as mentioned of translating, the bible’s translations from greek to english does the same when translating.

Seriously lame attempt, the age old ..” oh the quran copies blabla”

Quran is unique in its entirety, what is to be gained form any of this, why copy Christianity or Judaism , Islam isn’t even named after a tribe or man like those faiths, literally just means submission , it inherently preaches that all races are the same, and no one is above anyone else.

    • What is truly and utterly bizarre about your comment is that nowhere within the article do I refer to the Qur’an claim the the sun sets in a muddy pool or that we are made of potters clay. Instead it is a posting that simply points out that the claim that the Qur’an mentions black holes is utterly absurd and comes from a source that is neither credible nor reliable. Nothing, not a single word within your comment, reflects anything at all within the posting.

However, since you brought the topic up, then for the sake of completeness let’s look. Picking two highly respected translations, I’ll simply quote them without comment …

Claim: “Quran doesn’t say we are made of potters clay”

      Here it is … 55:14

      MUHSIN KHAN
He created man (Adam) from sounding clay like the clay of pottery.

      PICKTHALL
He created man of clay like the potter’s,

Claim: “It doesn’t say the sun sets in a muddy lake or watever you said”

      Here it is … 18:86

      MUHSIN KHAN
Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water. And he found near it a people. We (Allah) said (by inspiration): “O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness.”

      PICKTHALL
Till, when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a people thereabout. We said: O Dhu’l-Qarneyn! Either punish or show them kindness.

The Ayah’s that mentioned here aren’t clear enough.
Or perhaps my understanding is way less than I thought?
I really need to know what the Holy Quran says about the black holes and also the wormholes ?
Something clear to say (Black Holes) or (Wormholes) and not the vanishing stars or… ..

    • Hi “True”,

OK, let’s check this. The precise quote is this.

So when the stars are obliterated” … 77:8

Nope, that’s not a description of a Black Hole. In context it is not even attempting to describe cosmology, and is instead simply using poetry to describe a period of time far far in the future.

By the sky and the night comer – And what can make you know what is the night comer? It is the piercing star” … 86:1-3

Again, no the reference “night comer” is a poetical reference to a very bright star, not a black hole.

It is a rather common pattern for people to take vague poetical phrases and claim “This means …(insert some modern scientific understanding here)”.

Those that dismiss such claims tend to be those that have actually checked the exact verse and those that embrace such claims tend to be those that have not done so. You will also discover that no serious Quran scholar would ever promote such a claim.

  12. Dave, you mistaken the Holy Qur’an as a book of science that has to explain each of its scientific revelation with scientific terminology. The book is for all humanity, meaning it is meant to.be understood by everyone. If I give a layman person the theory of everything by hawking, will he understand its complexity and say “yeah, I believe every word he says”? No, not because the book is wrong but because it wasn’t written for a layman.

Another thing is, you talk about some Turkish man and his history and making it seem like HE WROTE THE QURAN? Are you being illogical? Please explain to me how a book revealed 1400 years ago has spoken about the universe expanding (which was then claimed to be true by scientists in the 20th century), the stages of embryology (later discovered to be true 1400 years later), that every living thing is made up of water, that the moon’s light is a refraction, all these scientific revelations and yet, you say they are merely poetic? I am amused because if nostradamus have revealed all this, then he would be looked at as a god. But ofcouese the Qur’an poses a threat to you, my friend. It is a book that challanges you to find any contradictions, so stop using the illogical response “its merely poetic and vague.” No Dave, it is revealed through the ultimate form of sophistication: simplicity.

    • // Please explain to me how a book revealed 1400 years ago has spoken about the universe expanding (which was then claimed to be true by scientists in the 20th century), //
Actually it does no such thing, it instead talks about the sun setting into a muddy pool each night … (static earth and moving sun) … and is very much a flat earth cosmology.

// the stages of embryology (later discovered to be true 1400 years later), //
It not only copies exactly what an earlier Greek Dr wrote, it also gets it quite wrong.

// that every living thing is made up of water, //
.. and also claims we are made of potters clay … and is also quite wrong.

// if nostradamus have revealed all this, then he would be looked at as a god. //
Actually if he had indeed produced such revelations, he would be looked upon as an idiot.

Pick the best, the clearest most distinct “revelation”, quote it exactly for all to see, and then please do feel free to explain why you think it to be credible.

  13. “It took me 30 seconds (or less) to find this debunking,…” It took me 30 seconds also to find out that Adnan Oktar was a lunatic who believed to be on a special mission or to be the Mahdi (very ant-islamic thinking). I found the following information written by a Muslim “To my dismay, later I discovered that his interest in the message was not prompted by his philosophical quest for truth but by his pragmatic strategy for his political ambitions. He thought that he could use it easily to attract the children of the rich people who had modern life style and culture that was incompatible with the medieval Arab culture which was promoted by the teachings of Hadith and Sunna. He was extremely obsessed with recruiting the handsome children of the rich people wearing expensive cloths. He was not interested in guiding poor people.” (Again, very ant-islamic)
So don’t you think that it would be proper to do some research on a guy first before you publish your reasoning and base your arguments on him? I am looking into all the debunking of the scientific miracles of the Quran. I will read both the Muslim opinion and then the non-muslim response to it. So we’ll see if you are right. Thanks for making me think about this.

  14. Black Hole Properties mentioned in the Quran

With the name of God the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

The Quran swears by destruction of stars and the subsequent formation of black holes to prove it is sent by God. (In 53:1 An oath by the destruction of stars is taken, In 56:75-76 An oath by the enormity of this event is taken, In 81:15-18 Formation of black holes which form after the destruction of giant stars and the fact that matter and light cannot escape is mentioned) – Below are the specific ayaat:

53:1: By the star when it Hawa (destructs, blows up)

53:2: Has neither Dalla (gone astray), Your Companion (Muhammad Blessings and Peace of God be upon him) nor Ghawa (nor is being misled)

53:3: Nor does he speak from Hawa (emotion)

53:4: It is not but a Wahi (revelation, inspiration) Yuha (revealed, inspired)

56:75: Fa (So) La (No), uqsimu (I swear, I take an oath) by the mawaq’i (occurrences, events) of the Nujuum (stars)

56:76: And indeed, it is surely an oath – if you knew – Azeem (tremendous, A supernova is a tremendous event during which more energy may be released than the Sun will in its entire life span)

56:77: That (this) is indeed a recital Kareem (honorable, the Qur’an in Arabic).

56:78: In a Book kept Maknoon (hidden).

56:79: Which (that Book with God) none can touch but the Mutaharoon (purified, the angels, the book in which is pre-written everything that will occur)

56:80: (It is) a tanzeel (sending down of revelation) from the Lord of the Alameen (human beings and Jinn (another creation given the gift of speech))

56:81: Then is it to this statement that you are Mudhinoon (indifferent)

56:82: And make (the thanks) for your provision that you Tukaziboon (lie about the Provider)

56:83: Then why (do you) not, when (death) reaches the Hulqoom (throat)

56:84: And you are at that time Tanzuroon (looking on)

56:85: And we (angels) are nearer to him than you, but you do not Tubsiroon (see)

56:86: Then why (do you) not, if you are not to be Madineen (recompensed, punished or rewarded)

56:87: Bring it (the soul) back, if you are Sadiqeen (truthful?)

56:88: If (the deceased) was of the Muqarabeen (close to God, from the foremost in doing good works)

56:89: Then (for him is) rauh and rayhan and a garden of Naeem (pleasure)

56:90: And if he was of the Ashab Al-Yameen (people of the right)

56:91: Then salam (safety from all bad things, paradise as well) for you, from the Ashab Al-Yameen.

56:92: But if he was from the Mukazibeen (liars and who were) Daaleen (astray, e.g. people with lots of money who didn’t care about the starving)

56:93: Then (for him is) accommodation of Hameem (intensely hot scalding water)

56:94: And burning in Jaheem (intense Hellfire)

56:95: Verily, this! This is Haq-ul-Yaqeen (the Truth with certainty)

56:96: Fa sabbih (So declare free from faults) the name of your Lord, Al-Azeem (Tremendous)

81:15: Fa (So) La (No), uqsimu (I swear, I take an oath) by Khunnas (drawn together objects) (When a massive star destructs, it subsequently draws together i.e. 10 times the mass of the sun is drawn to within a 30 km diameter in the stellar category of black holes)

81:16: Those that run (their courses) and Kunnas (sweep whatever is in their path, matter cannot escape)

81:17: And the night as it us’us (the darkness of a black hole is different than regular darkness)

81:18: And the light as it Tanaffus (As it gets pulled in, even light cannot escape)

81:19: Verily, this is the Word (this Qur’an brought by) a messenger Kareem (honourable, Jibrael (Gabriel), from God to the last human messenger)

81:20: (Who is) possessed of power and with the Owner of the Arsh (uppermost construction in heaven), Makeen (secure in position),

81:21: Obeyed there (in the heavens) and Ameen (trustworthy)

81:22: And your companion is not (at all) Majnoon (mad)

81:23: And he has already seen him (Gabriel) in the horizon Mubeen (clear)

81:24: And he (the last messenger) is not with the unseen Daneen (a with-holder, concealer of knowledge)

81:25: And it (the Qur’an) is not the word of Satan, Rajeem (expelled from the heavens).

81:26: So where are you Tazhaboon (going?)

81:27: It (the Quran) is not except a remembrance for the Alameen

81:28: For whoever wills among you that (he or she) Yastaqeem (stay straight, do what is right and avoid straying from what is right)

81:29: And you will not, except (it be) that Allah wills – Lord of the Alameen.

  17. // It is written that we all are made from water. Another place it is written that we all are made from dust. //

Not new ideas, just rips off what the bible says. This not “new” information, just what was believed at that time.

// Another place it is written that we all are made from clot of blood. Decades ago people deny that fact and Indeed it is truth now. //

The embryology in the quran simply copies the earlier Greek writers … so who exactly inspired them … Zeus perhaps.

// Who would have thought these facts 14 Centuries ago?? //

The Greeks, The Romans and many other early cultures that pre date Islam.

The Quran is a flat-earth ancient myth book full of poetical images that you can use to crow-bar in any meaning you want, it perfectly reflects the thinking of the time and does not in any way contain anything modern.

    • Earth is flat? my friend no where in the Quran.
I am not saying the the word of Bible are wrong. but it is mixed up with the ideas of the poeple of that time. in the bible there is a bitter water test. (drinking of poison and not dying. the sun is rotating around the earth etc.). Lots of scientific errors are present in the bible because the Bible we know is not in the true form. But with lots of scientific errors there are some scientific facts in this book. We muslims believe in Jesus (P.B.U.H). He was a messenger of god Like our prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H).
There are lots of scientific errors in the bible about embryology also. Why in the Quran these errors are not present? why only the facts are there? this is not written in the bible but written in the quran that after the blood clot it become leach like sub. who suck the blood or you can say take its earlier food which is necessary for growth.
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. or in simple words And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. (Qur’an, 51:47).
The expending universe theory was proved by Edwin Hubble in 1920 or he was able to think about expending universe in let say 1900 but it is present in the Quran.
My friend I don’t know you but I don’t want to hurt your and anyone’s feeling about the bible and the Jesus (P.B.U.H).
The last words of Jesus (P.B.U.H) were ” Oh Allah why do you leave me?” these words are present in the bible and also in the Quran. And we believe that the day will come when he will return back to this world. He is not Dead (may Allah forgive me). Just think about that there are approx. 124000 messenger that come to this world for giving us the message of God. By the Name there are only few mention may be 100 or 500 max. where are the others???
Because of the evil of men. what they did every time when the messenger passed away from this world they wrote or they mix their own ideas own knowledge in the book so that people of that time don’t follow the teaching of messenger. it happens every time in every messenger but in the case of Quran which is also a religious scripture like the bible, the Quran send to us in Arabic language and due to the fact that it has very very difficult grammer and difficult language no one can change any single word even if you put a dot the whole sentence will be change or become meaningless.
What you need to do is that be a good student and read it just for knowledge and try to be neutral and sincere with yourself Inshallah you will fond lots of things and lots of answers. Or just read it like it is Bible part 2. The word of God after the time of Jesus. and one more thing. there is not a Zeus and Hedes etc. this is real myth,

    • Seems to me you make your own thought. In quran the forming of baby is discuss in detail. If you so confident that the knowledge from the greek, bring us your reference.. show us the greek book. If not it is just a baseless claims..

Quran is truly a miracle.. our understanding of quran is enhanced by the advancement of modern science not the vis versa. Previous quran comentary were some based by past muslim scholars own thought which of course cannot be consider holy or clean from error.

Because of that, new quran commentary by new scholars still going on up to today.. For example in surah At Tariq. The word Tariq in arabic means way or path. Past scholars acctually had discusss the word.. Why Allah describe Star as Path.. they make their own interpretation but Allah knows best.

In the ayat in surah Tariq.. Allah ask Do yo know what is Tariq then Allah answer Al-Najmu Thaqib. Najmu means star while thaqib have a lot of meaning. You may refer the word to arabic dictionary.

One of it’s meaning is piercing, hand drill, deep and many more. Some of past scholars interpret it as light. But with science we know now which meaning that is truly meant by Allah. We don’t make up a new meaning.. we only choose the true meaning out of all it’s meaning.

    • The only kind of black hole in the Qur’an is one that intellect disappears into when someone is mesmerised by its content.

It will take only 4 or 5 months of your life to read it first place. But after that you will able to understand the beauty of this book. I Challenge you all. It is written that we all are made from water. Another place it is written that we all are made from dust. Another place it is written that we all are made from clot of blood. Decades ago people deny that fact and Indeed it is truth now. Who would have thought these facts 14 Centuries ago??
{Furthermore about Iron & water}. It is written that iron and water are not the product of earth, Both of them were fallen down for us.
{For expending Universe}: And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. or in simple words And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. (Qur’an, 51:47).
I have so many things to tell you. But it is best to find out by yourself. Right now my words are nothing to you but try to do some research in positive way. We are living our life with bullshit. It is glorious Quran that teach us how to live your life in a way of your creator.
