What can you do if you are afraid of hell?

hqdefault-3The concept of Hell is a very emotionally potent religious idea and so it is perhaps appropriate to cast our skeptical eye upon it. The idea is not just an interesting abstraction, but is instead for some quite real. Many do truly have a deep abiding fear of it due to a religious upbringing and so it is important to recognise this and not simply dismiss it.

I’m perhaps reminded of the topic because of the recent tragic passing of Gene Wilder. I loved his movies and very much enjoyed his work, he will be  quite rightly well-remembered. Michael Stone has been writing about how some Christians tend to pounce on such events when the person who has passed was openly not a believer. Mr Wilder was quite open about this, and when interviewed for the “Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish” book, he happily explained …

I’m going to tell you what my religion is. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Period. Terminato. Finito. I have no other religion. I feel very Jewish and I feel very grateful to be Jewish. But I don’t believe in God or anything to do with the Jewish religion.

Mr Stone within his posting then points out that David J Stewart, a Christian fundamentalist, is promoting the idea that Mr Wilder is now burning in hell simply because he did not believe and thus did not possess this magical mythical golden ticket.

Often when somebody is shouting loudly about religion you discover that it is being driven by something within themselves, and so I googled Mr Stewart’s name. Interestingly enough I discovered that he is asserted by some to be a convicted sex offender and that back in 2009, not too long ago, he was found guilty of having sex with an underage girl. To be honest, it is never really a surprise to discover such undercurrents, and so apparently it is his own guilt and fear that is a primary driving force that motivates him to turn the passing of somebody famous into a soap box.

So what exactly is Hell?

Now this is where it all gets interesting. You would think that there would be full clarity and agreement on the concept, but no, instead we find that there exists a very wide diversity of distinctly different beliefs on the topic.

Let’s do a very rapid high-level review.

Eastern orthodox

It is often viewed, as not a place, but instead is simply an absence of God, and hence not being in the presence of God is Hell. This is not universal, some Icons do depict hell as a place of punishment.

Catholic

Perhaps the most popular variation. It is declared to be a real place of eternal fiery punishment for those that refuse to love God. However, in addition to the heaven and Hell concepts, there is also a middle place they call purgatory where you can still potentially avoid hell. Historically Hell was often viewed as physically under the ground within the earth.

Evangelical views

It is generally seen as a place of unending conscious torment, both physical and spiritual, but for some that would simply be due to it being an “eternal separation” from God.

There are some who do not hold the belief that hell is forever and instead assert that you will be extinguished or annihilated after a period of “limited conscious punishment”. The groups that adhere to that belief include the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Jehovah’s Witnesses and Christadelphians.

In summary, there is no agreement or consensus at all.

What Evidence exists to verify that Hell is actually real in any way?

Just one word … none.

The concept exists, not because Hell is actually real, but instead as an attribute of religious belief. It is a potent bit of emotional manipulation designed to instil fear and thus motivate those that believe to stick with it and not drop out.

People who have been brought up within a belief system that promotes the “fear of hell” message often find that even after they have stopped being part of the belief, this emotional feeling looms and creates a pressure to go back. As a rather blatant bit of psychological manipulation it thrives and survives because it is effective.

Key Point: Rationality, reason and evidence play no part.

I’m struggling with a Fear of Hell, what can I do?

People do have quite crippling fears that can greatly impact their lives. Many of us do have utterly irrational fears to various degrees … mice, dentist, spiders, heights, etc … and this is a normal part of life. I also put into this list a fear of Hell as well. If one of these fears becomes so intense that it causes tremendous anxiety and interferes with your normal life, then there are specific strategies that you can adopt as a form of self-help.

If you are unable to cope, then you should seek help.

If however the fear is real, but not to a degree that cripples your normal life, then there are some self-help strategies that you can adopt.

Here are a few self-help tips to consider.

Tip-1 Face your fears one step at a time

Face up to the idea itself. Build a ladder and start climbing it.

Make a list of steps you can take. For example, you could look into where the idea comes from and how it has grown and evolved over time. Take it step by step and grow this into an understanding that it is a human made concept that has no evidence at all. Nurture a healthy skepticism of the claims and permit that to flourish.

Tip-2 Use a relaxation exercise

Deep breathing, meditation, and muscle relaxation are powerful antidotes to anxiety, panic, and fear. Learn some of these and add them into you toolkit of coping strategies.

Tip-3 Challenge Negative thoughts

You are a good person, better than the God described within the bible who indulged in genocide and promoted slavery as a good idea. Stand up and challenge the archaic ideas that seek to dominate you, and instead dominate them. Ponder over the observation that god, as described in the bible has slaughtered on a whim and on an industrial scale many innocent people. Come to appreciate that you are morally far better than that and would not choose to behave like that.

The text is simply an archaic text that reflects the fears and hopes of those that wrote it. It is time to cast off the toys of our cultural childhood.

The Concept of Hell

If you are struggling with strong emotions and a real fear, then here are a few additional points to consider.

  • There is no one universal concept of Hell, each and every variation of religious belief has a different understanding. It is also an idea that has evolved and changed, and is clearly an attribute of belief, and not a real concept at all. You do not need to take it seriously.
  • It is a religious tool that is there to manipulate you emotionally. It serves to benefit the belief, not you.
  • The ultimate source for the idea itself is the bible. This is an archaic text that is demonstrably wrong – no, slavery is not a good idea. No , planet earth is not flat. There is no Heaven or Hell, Angels and Demons do not actually exist. These are all primitive attempts by our ancestors to grasp meaning.
  • The beliefs that thrive today, do so because they have emotional attributes such as this built in to enable it to survive, and not because the various claims are actually true. The foundational aspect is fear, not faith.
  • Consider in your mind some other variations of religious belief that you consider to be false (If you are a Muslim, then consider Christianity, and if you are a Christian, then consider Islam). Each considers those that do not join to be destined for Hell, and yet these are mutually exclusive claims, they can’t both be right. Now hold in your mind the ease with which you dismiss them as false, consider the reasons you have for doing so, and apply those same reasons to your variation of belief.

I must however admit that each and every variation of religious belief does get one thing right. They all consider every other variation of belief to be wrong. I agree, they all are quite correct about that.

  1. My name is Alan Finch. I became a Christian in April of 1976. I would like to share my thoughts on the question that so many people ask in regards to “HOW COULD A LOVING GOD SENTENCE PEOPLE TO ETERNAL DAMNATION?”

For some reason John 6:44 has been GREATLY overlooked by the Church today. In this verse, JESUS clearly states that nobody can come to Him unless God draws that person to JESUS. You and I only came to JESUS because the Spirit of God drew us to JESUS.

There are billions of people who never had the Spirit of God draw them to JESUS. Since that is the case, why would a loving God sentence billions of people to eternal torment who never had the Spirit of God draw them to JESUS? The answer then becomes clear that the Scriptures are not being properly understood by the vast majority of people.

In John 12:32 JESUS clearly states that He is going to “DRAW ALL PEOPLE” to Himself. What is there not to understand about that proclamation by JESUS? This will happen during the time period that God has already chosen to do so.

God has His own plan for each individual that He has created. In the future, in His promise of RESTORATION, God’s Spirit is going to do such a GREAT and MIGHTY work in each individual that just as God has promised in Isaiah 45:23, Romans 14:11, Philippians 2:10&11, that at the name of JESUS ALL will bow the knee and every tongue confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD. There is no place in these verses that states that people are going to be forced to bow their knee before JESUS. Being forced to bow the knee before JESUS brings no Glory to God. The Scriptures are very clear that God only accepts a willing heart. So, ALL people are going to bow the knee before JESUS from a WILLING HEART, not from being forced.

Isaiah 45:23 states that every tongue shall swear before JESUS. The word “SWEAR” in this Passage of Scripture means to take an oath that JESUS is their Lord. In greater detail, it means to “PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO.” People who know that eternal damnation awaits them are certainly not going to be pledging allegiance to JESUS. Rather, they would be cursing JESUS.

JESUS often used metaphors in His teachings which has often been overlooked today by the Church. Once we begin to gain a better understanding of the metaphors used by JESUS then (PRAISE GOD) the Scriptures begin to come alive with clearer meaning. The problem that we have today in the Church is that much of the teaching is coming from a scholarly type of teaching, rather than from Holy Spirit revelation insight of the Scriptures. JESUS said that His Church is to be built upon Revelation.

I spent several years in putting together a 32 page document “WHAT IS THE GOOD NEWS OF THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST?” I put forth a pain stacking effort in trying to leave no stone unturned in Biblically expounding upon the Biblical truths that I share in my document.

  3. Thank you for writing this article!!! I appreciate all the helpful information contained in it.

I grew up being raised Christian in a Lutheran upbringing. In that upbringing, there was a belief in hell. Recently, in my later life and especially after losing my husband, I have done a lot of soul-searching and believe strongly in an after-life, but have yet to figure out what kind of god/higher power really exists. I am still actively going through this process, so please keep that in mind as I am writing this comment here.

I suffer from a multitude of fears but my biggest fear is the fear of eternal separation from all who I love after I die. This fear consists of existing in a conscious state aware of this separation while being in a dark void of nothingness and eternally feeling the excruciating pain of this nothingness forever. My latest belief system that I am currently focusing on involves the possibility of a source of love from some sort of higher power which we may actually merge into after we die becoming ONE with…almost becoming part of god ourselves (a belief system that would be shot down by my old Christian pastor as “new age” and “satan’s tool”).

With my new belief system, I am now afraid that if I do not let go of fear, I will never raise myself up to a higher conciousness to be part of the “oneness” and that because I have so much fear, my “vibrational energy” will remain low and that becoming part of the source of oneness (that I truly want to become a part of) requires being in a higher vibrational energy of having no fear. But because I have so much fear, that indicates that I am operating on a low level vibrational energy. While I am in such a state of fear and low vibration, I cannot really feel and experience love in this current state (which is also my greatest fear). Then, my fear is, if I stay in this state of fear and die, I may end up in that eternal state of separation and nothingness left out in a void alone forever.

This fear is what I deal with on a daily basis and it is pretty much controlling my life almost making me not being able to function at times.

Maybe there are others just like me, I don’t know, but at least I have the courage here to open up and write about it here….

Thank you for allowing me to express my thoughts and taking the time to read them. Thank you so much for writing this article as it provides some useful tools and help.
